SUSTAINABLE FARMING, SUPPLY CHAIN, FOOD SECURITY AND MORE!
Today, Agriculture is facing multiple challenges including a demand for more food and fibre to feed a growing population, reducing rural labour force, requirement of more feedstocks for a potentially huge bioenergy market, alongside contribution to overall development in the many agriculture-dependent developing countries, adopting more efficient and sustainable production methods and adapting to climate change.
Post-World-War 2, the dynamics of Agriculture changed and conventional farming also referred to as industrial farming was introduced. It includes the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other continual inputs, etc to increase the yield. The intent overall to feed the growing population appears positive, but the methods have proven destructive to the human race with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stomach challenges and obesity at record levels. The methods have also proven destructive for Biodiversity causing environmental degradation and severely impacting on ecosystem services
Organic farming, on the other hand, produces yields that are average 10-20% less than conventional agriculture; however, they are more profitable and environmentally friendly. With organic agriculture, environmental costs tend to be lower and the benefits greater including better Biodiversity and lower environmental degradation
As the old Chinese proverb says,
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”
we at Naturmed Scientific, have started taking our first steps towards a sustainable future. We are fulfilling our part by understanding and addressing the challenges in the Ayurvedic Herbs supply chain, one step at a time. We wish to leave a better and sustainable future for future generations. That’s why we are paying attention to the source of our plant raw material.
However, we cannot accomplish everything alone and that’s why we credit our partners around the world who understand our vision to build a sustainable food supply chain, together.
We started our journey by visiting organic farms and plantations in India in order to ensure that the raw material for our products is sourced from sustainable and organic certified farms. Since the transition from conventional farming to organic farming is a 3-year long process, it includes above all a lot of human perseverance and a vision for a brighter future.
During our visit, we saw well-managed, integrated organic farms spread over an area of 500 Acres with plantations covering
- Aloe Vera
- Bacopa Monnieri
- Coleus Forskohlii
that inspired us and gave us confidence that we are heading in the right direction.
However, not everything is perfect in the existing supply chain. That’s why we are working towards reducing the dependence on synthetic fertilizers and chemicals in other farms that have been managed conventionally till now. That’s why we are introducing sustainable agriculture practices that are a combination of organic and conventional techniques and thus paving a path in a sustainable future.
The journey ahead is long and challenging; however, with good global partners, it will become easier and enjoyable. If organic and sustainable farming inspires you, we are open to join hands with you and take up Organic Contract Farming Projects for medicinal herbs as per your requirements. We would be glad to have you as our partner to build a sustainable future.
